TAYLOR CAMP
Robert Stone 2009
Categories: Documentaries
Run time: 100 min. | USA
The sixties and seventies were turbulent times, but on Kauai’s north shore there was a safe haven—the ultimate hippie fantasy. In 1969, Elizabeth Taylor’s brother, Howard, bailed out 13 young Mainlanders jailed on Kauai for vagrancy, and invited them to camp on his oceanfront land. Soon waves of hippies, surfers and troubled Vietnam vets found their way to Taylor Camp and built a clothing-optional, pot-friendly tree house village at the end of the North Shore Road. It lasted until 1977 when, after condemning the village to make way for a State park, government officials torched the camp. Thirty years later, the story of Taylor Camp is told through historic photos and film footage, and interviews with campers, their neighbors, and the officials who got rid of them.

This film about a jungle tribe of young kids living on the beach at the "end of the rainbow" - Hanalei, Kaua'i, circa 1969-77, was one of the most moving films I've seen in a loooog time. The great photography, the great music, and the great story, knocked it out of the ballpark; a film that will stay with you for days! I LOVE THIS FILM!!!
